clients7Congratulations to our strategic partner The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust appointed as the new local host.

The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust (RWT) is one of just 15 NHS Trusts/Foundation Trusts in England to be appointed to run a local branch of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network, it was announced (Tuesday 3rd September 2013).

The NIHR Clinical Research Network is the clinical research delivery arm of the NHS. It provides funding to hospitals and surgeries to pay for research nurses, scans, x-rays and other costs associated with carrying out clinical research in the NHS.

Since April 2013, the Network has been carrying out a selection process to identify 15 local “host” organisations, as part of a programme to simplify its administrative arrangements, while strengthening the infrastructure for carrying out clinical studies across the country.

As the chosen Trust for the West Midlands, RWT will be awarded a five year contract from the Department of Health through the NIHR, and will take responsibility for distributing £27 million of funding per year, to support clinical research across the whole area.

Commenting on the appointment, RWT Chief Executive David Loughton CBE said: “Clinical Research is vitally important to the NHS and the population as a whole. For the Trust to be chosen to host the West Midlands branch of the NIHR Clinical Research Network gives us a fantastic opportunity to drive forward research and use the evidence we gather to improve ongoing treatments and develop new, potentially life-saving treatments for our patients.

“Clinical research is on the rise in the NHS and we have been helping to spearhead the trend. We are now very much looking forward to working with other NHS Trusts in the West Midlands region to ensure we stay at the cutting edge of clinical research being carried out and to look at ways to encourage more and more patients to take part.”
